REVIEW | Althea Petal Velvet Powder

Lately, Ive been feeling a bit sick but I have yet to find out what is wrong with me. I am hoping it is nothing serious. So for now, to relax my mind and divert my attention, I am going to share with you a review about the powder that has been a staple in my kit for almost a month now which is the Althea Petal Velvet Powder.

Althea Petal Velvet Powder (3g) | Php210

Product description (source):

Althea Says: Althea’s very own product range is here, and we’re starting off strong with the Petal Velvet Powder! This debuting beauty is a translucent powder that sets makeup and leaves behind a silky finish to the touch. Infused with oil from Althea seeds, this powder works to keep sebum production at bay without drying out the skin for a radiant, fresh look, all while giving out a gentle scent. Keep your makeup looking great all day or dust some on to stay shine-free!
Size: 3g
Type: All skin types
Color: Translucent
How To Use: Pick up product with a brush or puff provided and gently sweep onto the skin.

Feel free to watch my tagalog review and see actual check-ins during wear test with this product.

The packaging is simple yet pretty. The box looks like a mini Althea box and the powder is housed inside a small, frosted, plastic tub with pink screw cap. Most of the things written on the box and tub are in Korean language. One thing I noticed with Korean products is that they always put expiry/manufacture dates on the product. BUT I didn’t find the list of ingredients on the packaging so I am sharing with you the list that I saw from their website.

SILICA, MICA, VINYL DIMETHICONE/METHICONE SILSESQUIOXANE CROSSPOLYMER, DIMETHICONE/VINYL DIMETHICONE CROSSPOLYMER, METHICONE, HIBISCUS SYRIACUS SEED EXTRACT, HYDROGENATED LECITHIN, 1,2-HEXANEDIOL, GLYCERYL CAPRYLATE, MALTODEXTRIN, FRAGRANCE

It’s packaging has a plastic seal inside and also comes with a sifter that I personally thinks dispenses a bit too much product. I would suggest not removing the seal entirely.

Aside from the powder itself, I think this puff is also a star in this review. It may be small but it delivers because it picks up product nicely and it feels really soft on the skin.

At last, the powder! Well, I MUST say that this is, by far, the finest powder that I have tried. It is very fine to the point that it gets dispensed too easily so be careful.

Swatched

Blended

After applying it on top of my base, I can tell that this product has a slight blurring effect on lines and pores.

Although it appears translucent based on the hand swatch above, it still gives a bit of white cast when used in flash photography.

I forgot to take a photo 4 hours after I first applied it but this photo above was taken 4 hours after I have retouched my T-zone with powder. After I removed the sweat and oil, my face still looks okay. See video above for reference.

Here, I tried using the powder to set my waterproof foundation. I wanted to see if it will look patchy or cakey. The finish is still smooth and silky although it doesn’t look natural anymore because my base is quite heavy to begin with.

After almost 8 hours, my skin looked a bit shiny on the T-zone area. I was expecting that products would settle on my lines and sides of my nose but there weren’t any. That’s what usually happens to me when I am wearing a long-wearing foundation. I think this powder helped a lot.

What I like:

  • Sturdy, clean looking and travel-friendly packaging
  • Sealed upon purchase
  • Expiry date is printed on the packaging
  • Smells really nice and it goes off right after application
  • Easy to apply with the help of its useful puff
  • Lightweight and does not look cakey
  • Texture is really fine, soft and smooth (the best, by far!)
  • Controls oil for at least 4 hours (for non long wearing base) and almost 8 hours for waterproof makeup base/foundation
  • Blurs out my fine lines and pores
  • Non-comedogenic
  • Received the product 5 days after the confirmation email (this came straight from Korea to Philippines)
  • Made from natural ingredients and cruelty free

What I don’t like:

  • The holes on the sifter is a bit too big for a powder as fine as this
  • Ingredients are not printed on the packaging
  • Slight white cast when used in flash photography
  • Only available online via Althea’s website
  • Quite pricey because you only get 3g of product (but it gets justified by its performance and natural ingredients)

After first few tries, I immediately decided that I want to purchase back ups. I ordered 4 pieces more (2 for me and 1 each for my sister and mom). That’s how much I love this product! I have other powders in my collection but I still find myself reaching for this.
